Maharashtra arathi pronunciation: locally: is a state in the western region of India and is the nation's and also the world's second-most populous sub-national entity. It has over 110 million inhabitants and its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. Nagpur serves as second capital as well as winter capital of the state. Maharashtra's business opportunities along with its potential to offer a higher standard of living attract migrants from all over India.
Ancient and medieval Maharashtra included the empires of the Satavahana dynasty, Rashtrakuta dynasty, Western Chalukyas, Mughals and Marathas. Spread over 118,809 sq mi (307,710 km2), it is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Indian states of Karnataka, Telangana, Goa, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The major rivers of the state are Godavari, Krishna, Narmada and Tapi. The state has several tourist destinations including the popular Hindu places of pilgrimage, Pandharpur, Dehu and Alandi. Places with wide appeal include Hazur Sahib Nanded at Nanded, and Saibaba shrine at Shirdi. Maharashtra is the most urbanized state in India, with large cities besides the capital Mumbai such as Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Aurangabad.

Places to see in Maharshtra

Alibag

Alibag was developed under the Naval Chief of the Maratha Ruler Shivaji. It is a coastal town and is famous for its white sandy beaches which are often unpopulated and cleaner than Mumbai beaches. The attractions can be covered in a day or two and there are plenty of cheap and hospitable lodging facilities. The various temples are also worth visiting as they display a brilliant Hindu Maratha architecture.

Appu Ghar

It is in Pune. Number of children games is available at this fun park. Appu Ghar also attracts youngsters. There is a cool and comely Lake for older generation people near the park. For games, funs and frolics, it is a place worth visiting.

Aurangabad

Aurangabad is named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and is one of the most prominent tourist places in Maharashtra. The city is famous for its historical monuments and the ancient caves of Ajanta and Ellora which are a national heritage site. The culture of this town is heavily influenced by the Mughal and the Muslim culture of Hyderabad and Marathi and Urdu are the main languages spoken here. The city has various lakes and the special cuisines in this region of Maharashtra are mouth watering.

Baneshwar

It is situated 30 km away from Pune. This place is known for its scenic beauty and Baneshwar Temple. There is a garden and a small stream behind the temple. Visitors enjoy playing and swimming over here.

Bhushi Dam

It is a very popular picnic spot, which is located at a distance of about 5 km from Lonavala. A wonderful waterfall near the dam is one of the most thrilling spot. The dam is full with rainwater in monsoon.

Brahmagiri

It is located in Nashik. This is a mountain of 550m in height. Brahmagiri is the source of the Holy Godavari River. Godavari flows in three directions from the mountain - Godavari, Vaitarna, Chakra Tirth. Kolambika Devi Temple, Kolambika Devi Temple and Gorakh Gumpha Ganga Sagar are the other attractions near it.

Chaul

It is an old Portuguese settlement, located 40 km south of Mumbai. Portuguese settled here in 1522, and this area was later taken over by the Marathas. Visitors can find forts, churches, ancient Buddhist caves, temples and the ruins of an old Portuguese palace here.

Deolali Camp:

It is one of the oldest important Indian army military centres. It is located 16 km away from Nashik. One can also shop at Deolali market near the camp. There is the famous temple of Lord Khandoba on the hills.

Esselworld

It is Mumbai's only international-style theme park and amusement centre situated close to Gorai Beach. Esselworld offers over 40 exciting rides, games, and attractions. The Water Kingdom of the fun park is said to be the largest of its kind in Asia.

Film City

It is located away from Mumbai's hurly burly life, on a quiet locality of Aarey Colony. The Film City is equipped studios, recording room, a theater, and facilities like garden, lakes, ground for fighting scenes, helipads etc. for outdoor shooting.

Khadakwasla and Panshet Dam

These dams provide water to the entire Pune city. It is half and hour from Pune and two and half-hour from Mumbai. The amazing view of Sinhagad and Peacock Bay is again a major attraction of Khadakwasla. Panshet is very popular for water sports like Speed Boats and Water Scooters etc. One can have a nice road to Panshet surrounded by dark green woods.

Khandala

Located on the Western Ghats, Khandala is located between the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The city is easily accessible and is a popular hiking getaway near Mumbai. The various trekking locations and viewpoints allow some magnificent views of the entire valley and the Western Ghats. The ancient rock cut caves of Karla and Bhaja are also a must visit along with the Bhushi Lake. The rock formations and cliffs in Khandala have been famous since ages and it is a popular weekend retreat for the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra.

Kolhapur

The city of Kolhapur is located at the banks of the Panchganga River and one of the Princely states of the Marathas. The city is considered to be the heart of the Maratha Empire and is famous for its various historical monuments and cultural heritage of the Marathi people. The climate is pleasant all year round with heavy rainfalls during the monsoons. The best time to visit the city is during any of the major Hindu festivals like Holi, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Vijaya Dashami and Navaratri. The special ‘kolhapuri slippers’ and the kolhapuri cuisines are worth trying out.

Koyna Dam

It is known as one of the largest Hydroelectric Power plants in India. Having highest rainfall in the region, locality of the dam is gifted with thick forests. Best time to visit the dam is during the rainy days.

Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Maharashtra and is located at the Western Ghats. The average elevation of the place is approximately 1,353 meters above sea level and is the source of the Krishna River. The water originates from a spout which is shaped like the mouth of a cow and is situated at an ancient temple of Lord Shiva. The city is a famous summer retreat for the people in Mumbai and is famous for its lakes and trekking hotspots.

Matheran

Another great hill station located at the Western Ghats in the state of Maharashtra, Matheran is located at an elevation of approximately 800 meters above sea level. The city is famous for its cool and less humid climate and is a popular summer retreat for the population of Maharashtra. The British influence on the architecture is pretty evident and is well preserved by the officials. The train ride to Matheran is of special mention as it is a slow ride that will give you ample time to experience the intoxicating surroundings.

Mumbai

Formerly known as ‘Bombay’,Mumbaiis the largest city and the capital of Maharashtra. It is also the most populated city in India and the 5th most populous city in the world. The city that we see today is a collection of 7 islands which were joined into a single metropolitan through land reclamation techniques in the 18th century under the rule of the British East India Company. The city is often nicknamed the Manhattan of India and is home to the famous Indian film industry or ‘Bollywood’. You might need more than a week to explore all the attractions in this city alone, with a huge number of historical monuments, beaches etc.

Nashik

Nashik is located in the North-Western region of Maharashtra and is located on the banks of the river Godavari which also originates here. The place is mentioned several times in Hindu Mythology and has been famous for being one of the cities that host the Kumbha Mela of India once every 12 years. The town has a huge number of tourist attractions including museums, gardens and a huge array of ancient Temples which are sacred and have been regarded highly important in the Hindu mythology. The city boasts of its authentic Marathi cuisines which must be tried.

Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri is a sea port located near the Arabian Sea in the State of Maharashtra. The town has been mentioned prominently in the Hindu mythology and is famous for its Temples. The place contains several different breathtaking natural phenomena like the Rajapur Ganga which is a collection of 14 pools of water which appear almost once in every 3 years.

Snake Park

It is at Pune since 1986. The park has collection of a wide range of reptiles, birds, and others. The special attraction is the six-year-old, nine feet long King Cobra. Temples of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Vishnu and Kartikeya, Goddess Parvati are also there near the park.

Solapur

Solapur is located on the Karnataka state border and the main languages spoken here are Marathi and Kannada. The city is located at the Deccan plateau and enjoys a moderate and dry climate most of the year. The ancient temples and lakes are also a great place to visit in Solapur. The Siddeshwar Temple is an ancient temple built in the 16th century and is visited by an average of 35 lakh pilgrims in a year.

Vadhu and Tulapur

Sambhaji, son of Shivaji was killed in Tulapur and his samadhi was built in Vadhu. Tulapur is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva as well. In this temple, also known as Sangameshwar, Sambhaji was arrested by Aurangzeb and was later killed. Tulapur was originally known as 'Nagargaon'.
