Dadar & Nagar Haveli

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is one of the union territories of India. It lies near the west coast and consists of two separate parts. Dadra is surrounded by the state of Gujarat, and Nagar Haveli lies on the borders of Maharashtraand Gujarat.
The first thing that is most striking about Dadra and Nagar Haveli is its natural beauty. The lush green forests, meandering rivers, distant mountain ranges and a magnificent kaleidoscope of flora and fauna are the most intriguing aspects about this union territory. Situated in the western corner of the Indian sub-continent, it is a union territory located between Gujarat and Maharashtra. With a total area of 491 square kilometers, an interesting element about this place is its location in the watershed of the Daman Ganga River which flows through the region. Dadra and Nagar Haveli had been a Portuguese colony since the year 1779 and it was only in the year 1954 that it was made a part of India. Till 1961 it operated independently and was self-governing. In the same year it became a union territory of India and now has representation in both the houses of the Indian Parliament.
The most important towns of the union territory are Dadra and Silvassa, which is also the capital city.
To the east of Dadra and Nagar Haveli lies the Western Ghats, and to its north and east lie the districts of Gujarat, whereas the districts of Maharashtra border it in the south. Towards the northeastern side of Dadra and Nagar Haveli the presence of the Western Ghats makes the terrain a little hilly but in the central part the land is mostly plain and is very fertile.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli comprise of 1 district, 1 block and 72 villages and has 3,43,709 population, according to census 2011. An in depth study about Dadra and Nagar Haveli reveals that there are a number of tribes in the region; these include Varlies, Kokana, Dhodia and Dublas. These tribal people are independent, self sufficient and have their own culture and social way of life.
Dadra consists of 3 villages, and Nagar Haveli has the town of Silvassa and 68 villages. Known for its lush green forest reserves, meandering rivers and vast flora and fauna, this union territory is one of the most popular tourist destinations.
The territory enjoys a very pleasant climate from November to March, which is actually the best time to visit this place. The summer temperature does not go very high, due to its proximity to the sea, and the nights are really pleasant. The southwest monsoon occurs from June to September. During this time there is profuse rainfall in the region. The rainfall is about 200 to 250 cm.

Places to see in Dadar & Nagar Haveli

Bindrabin Temple

Also called as Tadkeshwara Temple, Bindrabin Temple, which is dedicated to god Shiva, is situated 18 kms away from Silvassa. The location of the temple in itself is very serene – on Sakartod River banks surrounded by tall trees. The atmosphere relaxes you and you can make yourself more comfortable in one of the three cottages set up by the Department of Silvassa tourism. You can find an eatery too. Children can indulge in the recreational area near the temple.

Church of Our Lady of Piety

A reminder of Portuguese rule in the land, Church of Our Lady of Piety was built during 18th century. It is situated opposite Tribal Museum. The stone made church has amazing arches at the outside and well constructed interiors. You can have some peaceful moments for yourself once you are inside.

Dudhni Lake

Located 40 kms away from Silvassa, Dudhni Lake is a vast expanse of water surrounded by small hills. Famously referred to as the ‘Kashmir of the West’, the lake is formed by the waters of Madhuban reservoir. The isolated Dudhni, which is home to the lake, calms your senses. Well, you have entertainments that can make your adrenalin flow. The water sports available here include rowing boats, speed boats, water scooters, kayaks, canoes, jet skis and shikara rides. Trekking through the dense forests and camping on the river side would be a memorable adventure. If you love to have a glimpse of the life of tribals, here is your chanch.

Hirwa Van Garden

Yet another spectacular garden in the Union Territory, the only difference being that it is forest made by man. Situated on the Silvassa – Dadra road, the garden is a superb specimen of architecture. Mesmerizing waterfalls, beautiful cascades, small springs, stone walls, arches, lush greenery, colorful flowers, crisscross walkways, in fact, everything about Hirwa Van Gardenis amazing. There is a separate play section for children and the play equipments available here keep the children amused when you are lost in tranquility.

It has a seven meter high wall to ensure safety. Special vehicles designed to tour the dense land take you inside to have a glimpse of the life of lion, the king of forest.

Swaminarayan Temple
