Haryana

The state of Haryana that belongs to the Kuru region of North India was formed on 1st November 1966. 'Adobe of God'is the Sanskrit meaning of the word Haryana. The state is referred as the cradle of Indus Valley and Vedic Civilization that flourished at the banks of the extinct Saraswati River. Chandigarh the union Territory is the capital of Haryana and also of Punjab. The Epic wars and other significant wars fought there has influenced the shaping of Indian History. Haryana was under the administration of Punjab Province in the British India. However, after independence the state became part of the Indian Union as the India's 17th state formed on linguistic basis in 1966.

Saraswati, the now extinct river is believed to have flowed through the state of Haryana. The Eastern boundary of Haryana is surrounded by the river Yamuna. Its main seasonal river is Ghaggar rising between Yamuna and Sutlej from the outer Himalayas. Markanda which was earlier known as Aruna is the other seasonal river of Harayana that originates from Shivalik Hills and enters the state near Ambala. Excess water of Markanda river reaches the Sanisa Lake where it merge with Saraswati. Other major stream is the Tangari that rises in the Mewat hills. Indori, Dohan and Kasawati are the other rivers that rise from the Mewat Hills.
